The ACC has finally figured out that their divisions were not working and are having the top two teams in the conference face off in the Championship game. This may be the perfect year for it as well, as we have two teams that could be Playoff Contenders.
Clemson has been the monster of this conference for the last decade, but Florida State this season has the best QB and skill players in the conference. It could be the year that they take down the king.
The Florida State Seminoles and Quarterback Jordan Travis had a breakout season and is the preseason No. 6 favorite to win the Heisman right behind Klubnik. Travis had 32 total touchdowns in 2022 and now has former Michigan State wide receiver Keon Coleman.
Coleman was a spring transfer and should take defenses’ attention away from Johnny Wilson on the outside. The running game should be very good again with the return of Trey Benson. Jared Verse leads a defense that added depth across the board via the transfer portal and returns seven starters. Week one against LSU will tell us a lot about this team.
Clemson has been the most talented team in the conference for the last decade, and they still may have the best trenches, but their offense has been lackluster the last few seasons. This year they are starting Phenom Cade Klubnik and switching to an Air-Raid offense after the hire of TCU’s Garrett Riley. They have the best linebackers in the conference and recruit better than just about anyone. If the offense explodes, they could be national title good. Plus, their two toughest games are at home, with Florida State and Notre Dame still visiting.
North Carolina is the last team with a chance to win the ACC. They have the best QB Prospect in the conference, with superstar Drake Maye. He was one of the best players in America last year, but their defense was abysmal last year.
If they can take a step on that side of the ball, they could be a dangerous bunch. They avoid Florida State and Louisville, but they do visit Clemson and a rivalry game at NC State.
Week 1 against LSU may determine whether Florida State will be regarded as nationally elite or relevant, writes @slmandel.
Is he backing the Seminoles to make the jump? And which ACC team does he regard to be a "complete wild card?"
