With the NFL Draft just under one month away, it looks as if CJ Stroud is running away as the number one pick.
The Panthers are clearly picking a QB and many seem to think that Stroud is the one that they’re picking according to the odds of being drafted first overall.
When the odds for the first overall pick opened in May 2022, Stroud opened as a 200 favorite while Bryce Young wasn’t far behind with 225 odds.
After the 2022-23 college football season got underway though, Young took over as the favorite and by a whopping -120 margin compared to Stroud’s odds that remained at 200.
Their odds continued to separate and even saw Young favored at -190 while Stroud had 365 odds in March 2023.
Following the trade that saw the Chicago Bears trade the number one pick to the Panthers, their odds immediately swapped with Young getting bumped way down to 320 and Stroud moving up to -275.
Since the initial switch, Stroud’s odds of being selected first overall have gone to an even stronger -330 while Young’s odds have come up a little to 225.

Overall, the Panthers have seen zero impact on their Super Bowl as they opened and have remained at 5500 odds. Their NFC Championship odds also stayed put at 2500 odds while their odds to win the NFC South haven’t moved from 250.
Looking at the actual fit, it makes sense as to why Stroud is so heavily favored being that he first the mold of what they are used to in a QB as far as builds go. Stroud stands at 6’3 and weighs 218 pounds while Young is 5’10 and 194 pounds.
Some of the Panthers best years came with a somewhat oversized quarterback in Cam Newton who stood at 6’5 and 245 pounds and he was able to bring them to the Super Bowl.
In each of their final seasons playing college ball, Stroud did outplay Young with 3,688 passing yards and 41 touchdowns (2nd in the country) while Young put up 3,328 yards and 32 touchdowns.
Passing touchdowns is an area that the Panthers are lacking in a big way with three QBs last season (Baker Mayfield, Sam Darnold, PJ Walker) only being able to combine for 16 total touchdowns.
If Stroud could put up even just half of last year’s numbers, he’d prove to be worth the pick.
